Fundraising Event: Screening of The Woman Who Loves Giraffes

The Order of Canada member will be in person for an exclusive screening of the documentary on her life, “THE WOMAN WHO LOVES GIRAFFES” at Waterloo’s Princess Twin Cinema at 2:00pm on July 10. Long-time family friend Micah Hertzog has personally sponsored the screening and is inviting the public to attend with a nominal donation to the Anne Innis Dagg Foundation. “Our family has known Micah for over 50 years, and he is a wonderful supporter of our philanthropic efforts,” said Mary Dagg, CEO, Anne Innis Dagg Foundation.

In 1956, 23-year-old Canadian biologist, Anne Innis Dagg, made an unprecedented solo journey to South Africa to become the first Western scientist to study giraffes in the wild. Upon returning to Canada, armed with her unparalleled knowledge in the field, Anne faced unsurmountable sexism in academia that prevented her from achieving tenure and advancing her career. For three decades, Anne Innis Dagg was absent from the giraffe world until 2010 when she was sought out by giraffologists and not just brought back into the fold, but finally celebrated for her work.

Attendees of the screening will get an opportunity to see the original artwork that famed Canadian wildlife painter Robert Bateman painted personally for Anne. Signed prints of the originals will be available for order on the Bateman Foundation website. “Robert and I share a friendship dating back to the 1950s and it all began with our mutual passion for animals and nature. I’m thrilled to share this artwork from my personal collection,” said Anne Innis Dagg.

Available prints for order online:

Tall Order - Giraffe (small)
Tall Order - Giraffe (large)
Running Wild - Giraffes

Proceeds of the sale of the prints will support both the Anne Innis Dagg Foundation and the Bateman Foundation.

Dr. Anne Innis Dagg re-traces the steps of her groundbreaking 1956 journey to South Africa to study giraffes in the wild – and discovers a startling contrast between the world of giraffes she once knew and the one it has become. Weaving through the past and present, her harrowing journey gives us an intimate look into the factors that destroyed her career and the forces that brought her back.
